Levon Helm

One of the many highlights of last night’s three hour Bruce Springsteen show in Newark, N.J. was the singer’s impromptu tribute to the late Levon Helm. Springsteen and the E Street Band was joined by a full house at the Prudential Center in singing the the Band‘s ‘The Weight.’

In the last decade of his life, Levon Helm opened up his home in Woodstock, N.Y. for his Midnight Ramble concerts. Therefore, it’s fitting that it will be the site of a memorial for him. Levon Helm, drummer and vocalist with the legendary rock group simply known as the Band, died today (April 19) at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer.  His wife Sandy and daughter Amy posted the news of his imminent exit on his official website earlier this week.

Although it is reported that they have endured a somewhat tumultuous relationship since the demise of the Band in 1976, it appears as though drummer Levon Helm and guitarist Robbie Robertson have mended some fences.
