Bicyclist Involved In Fatal Crash Identified As Fort Collins Man
The bicyclist involved in a fatal collision with a pickup truck in Fort Collins on Wednesday, June 30 has been identified.
The Larimer County Coroner's Office has identified the deceased as 75-year-old Don E. Lightbody of Fort Collins.
As per an initial report regarding last month's incident, Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) responded to a report of a crash involving a pickup truck and a bicyclist at the intersection of Jerome Street and Vine Drive on Wednesday, June 30 at around 9 a.m.
The adult male cyclist from Fort Collins had reportedly been traveling south on Jerome Street, turned right onto Vine Drive and collided with the passenger side of a 2014 Ram 2500 pickup truck traveling west on Vine Drive.
Police said they determined that the 2014 Ram 2500 pickup was hauling a trailer as it was headed west on Vine Drive during the time of the collision.
The adult male cyclist, who has since been identified as Don E. Lightbody, was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured during the incident.
The FCPS C.R.A.S.H. (Collision Response and Scene Handling) team responded to investigate the incident. As a result of the crash, Vine Drive was closed from College Avenue to Linden Street for about 4.5 hours while officers processed the scene.
Records indicate this incident marks the second cyclist death in Larimer County this year.
According to the Coloradoan, Benjamin Higgins of Boulder reportedly lost control of his bike on a steep grade during the Ride to End Alz event benefiting the Alzheimer's Association on June 13; he was discovered by another rider down an embankment near the intersection of Larimer County Road 27 (Stove Prairie Road) and Colorado Highway 14.
