Charley Tours the Colorado Freedom Memorial in Denver [VIDEO] [PICTURES]
I couldn't think of a better way to spend my RED (Remember Everyone Deployed) Friday morning that with a quick tour of the Colorado Freedom Memorial in Denver.
The Colorado Freedom Memorial is located in Aurora just South of I-70 near Buckley Air Force base and may be the state’s newest monument to honor our fallen heroes. Built in 2013, the Colorado Freedom Memorial is built with beautiful glass panels and houses the names of close to 6000 of our Armed Forces who were Killed In Action since we became a state.
The glass panels are erected in a way to reflect the skies and our Rocky Mountains and are angled to represent our heroes falling in action. It stands 12’ high and is 95’ long with the trough of water that runs in front representing the oceans that separate Colorado from the fields of battle.
There is also a separate panel, as you can see here, that honor those who never made it home because they were lost at sea, shot down or killed behind enemy lines with their remains never being found. For those listed as MIA, this is their panel.
The Colorado Freedom Memorial is the first of its kind here in America that is dedicated to all wars, all branches of service and contain the names of every single person who died in those wars, including Faith Hinkley from Monte Vista, who is the only uniformed female listed on the wall.
Flags here always fly at half-staff in honor of those Killed In Action and will never be raised in their honor.
The Colorado Freedom Memorial is easy to find and probably easiest to get to by going South on Airport Blvd off I-70 to E 6th Ave. Go east to the next street which is Telluride and turn left. The memorial is at the Springhill Community Park and the address is 756 Telluride St. here in Aurora.
