Colorado surely has its fair share of "odd" contests, a Rocky Mountain Oyster Eating Contest for example, but this one in Wyoming sounds worth the trip.

Maybe you've come down with some "cabin fever" after all of the cold weather that we've experienced, maybe you're thinking about a road trip to Deadwood for some gambling. This event in northern Wyoming could be what the doctor ordered.

Maybe you've taken a road trip out of Colorado to see a concert, a football game, play some softball or maybe some disc golf. Have you ever taken a road trip to see "chicken roping?" It doesn't seem likely, especially if you haven't even heard of it. Let's get that part out of the way, shall we?

It's an event that came across my radar courtesy of CowboyStateDaily.com, where initially they had a story about how a bar in a small town in Wyoming might be able to fall into a new category of proposed licensing, a "liquor and entertainment" liquor license. With that liquor license, kids could stick around the establishment after a certain hour, to watch, say... chicken roping.

It could be that chicken roping is popular in Wyoming because of all the cowboys. Cowboys need to stay active in the colder months when there aren't a lot of rodeo's and such going on. An event coming up in February of 2023, can help them stay sharp, while onlookers get some good old-fashioned entertainment.

WHAT IS THE EVENT?

At Dewey's Place, a bar in Moorcroft, Wyoming, they'll be holding their annual "Chicken Roping Contest" on February 18, 2023.

WHAT?

Technically, according to CowboyStateDaily.com, they'll be using roosters this year because of the chicken shortage, but the contestants will be trying to "rope" these roosters, like you would a calf in calf-roping.

WHAT KIND OF RULES DO THEY HAVE?

They have several rules, which include:

  • 45-second time-frame
  • Rope the head first, then the heel
  • Any abuse of the roosters will not be tolerated
  • If a rooster is killed, there will be a $100 fine

WHAT'S THE PRIZE?

Each contestant puts in $20, which goes to the "purse." There may also be some other "cowboy swag" to be won.

A friend and I were really thinking about taking a couple of days to travel up to Wyoming and into Deadwood, stopping out at Dewey's along the way to see the contest. You could probably find worse ways to spend a weekend in Wyoming.
