The Boulder County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that a climber died in Eldorado Canyon State Park earlier this week.

According to an Oct. 7 press release via the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, officials initially received a call from a group of four climbers who had been climbing on the Rincon wall in Eldorado Canyon State Park and had located a fallen climber around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 6).

The climber was believed to have been “free soloing” at the time of the incident; in case you don't know, a free solo is a climb in which a climber uses no artificial aids for support and has no rope or other safety equipment for protection in case of a fall.

The individuals who called in to report the fallen climber told officials that he was not conscious, not breathing, and appeared to be deceased.

Crews from both Rocky Mountain Fire and the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group were first to arrive on the scene. Upon arrival, rescuers determined that the climber, a 31-year-old male from Lakewood, was deceased.

The Wednesday evening incident was not deemed suspicious by investigators and does not pose any threat to the public.

The deceased climber was carried out by the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group; according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, the rescue took approximately three hours.

The climber's identity was not disclosed in the media release on Thursday morning, as the fallen climber’s name is being withheld pending positive identification and notification to the family.

The incident was investigated by Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Detectives and the Boulder County Coroner’s Office Investigators.
