The public will soon be able to enjoy even more of Colorado's beauty.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) announced on Thursday (May 14) that the 19,200 acres surrounding Fishers Peak will be the state's 42nd state park.

CPW officially acquired the property from its partners, the City of Trinidad, The Nature Conservancy, The Trust for Public Land, and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), on April 2.

Fishers Peak is not the only landmark in the area, as the property also features ancient horizontal lava flows on Raton Mesa.

According to a press release from CPW, these lava flows were an important landmark for Native Americans, as well as pioneers traveling along the Sante Fe Trail.

The area is also home to many native wildlife species, including the mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, mountain lion, and black bear.

The property is currently closed to the public, but CPW is planning a phased opening approach that will eventually allow all outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy it.
