Denver’s Smoking Age Is Now 21 Years Old

Effective as of October 1, 2019, it is now illegal to sell cigarette products to anyone under the age of 21 in the city of Denver... and we're sure no one will have an opinion about it.  

According to 9NEWS, Denver's city council unanimously voted to raise the legal age from 18 to 21 on Monday night.

'Currently, any store caught selling tobacco products to people who are underage faces a $250 fine,' 9NEWS reported.

Additional citations could result in stores getting suspension of one year.

The age was raised, KKTV said, because 'experts say higher tobacco ages could prevent or delay initiation of tobacco use by young people.'

500 other cities, and 18 states (Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Washington, DC) have already raised the age for tobacco sales to 21 as of 2019. Ultimately, there's no doubt that it's a good thing to keep harmful, addictive products (especially vapes) away from kids and teens. However, we anticipate there may be a bit of push back from adult smokers between the ages of 18 and 21.
