Denver's Stapleton neighborhood will soon be called Central Park.

According to Denver7, Stapleton United Neighbors (SUN) chose the new name after the moniker won 63% of the vote in the organization's poll regarding the area's name change.

The new name choice represents the neighborhood's largest open space, as well as one of north Denver's main streets.

"The name [Central Park] is reflective of where we are, who we are in our neighborhood," Colorado Senator Angela Williams told the station. "It is just a proud moment."

The community's original Stapleton name has caused controversy for years, as it comes from former Denver Mayor Benjamin Stapleton, who was a KKK member in the 1920's.

Stapleton residents voted to keep the moniker in 2019, but the push for a name change saw a resurgence in June following the death of George Floyd.

However, Central Park is not Stapleton's official name yet.

The Master Community Association (MCA) must now send a formal request for a name change to the City of Denver. If that is approved, Colorado can say goodbye to Stapleton.
