The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment has confirmed the first two cases of West Nile Virus in humans in Larimer County this year; one in Fort Collins and another in Wellington.

Fortunately, LCDHE reported that neither were hospitalized. However, West Nile cases in humans do increase this time of the year, typically through September.

'About 75 percent of people who are infected do not show symptoms; about 25 percent will develop West Nile fever,' LDCHE said in a press release. 'Less than one percent develop the more severe neuroinvasive form, which can lead to hospitalization, critical illness, chronic disability, or even death.'

To avoid contracting West Nile Virus, make sure to protect yourself with the 'Four Ds' and a mosquito repellent with DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus or IR3535, the health department says.
