On Monday (June 29), Governor Jared Polis signed a bill officially making Fishers Peak in Trinidad Colorado's newest state park.

Polis announced the news on his Facebook page, stating that the new park will not only protect wildlife, but also boost the Southern Colorado economy.

"In Colorado, we value and cherish our treasured state lands and wildlife. It's part of who we are and why we call Colorado our amazing home," said Polis in his announcement. "We're so excited to protect this beautiful, iconic land and open it up to you, the public, for years to come!"

Fishers Peak is a 9,600-foot-tall landmark located east of I-25 near the New Mexico border. The land surrounding the peak, known as Crazy French Ranch, will also be a part of the new state park.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the City of Trinidad, The Nature Conservancy, The Trust for Public Land, and Great Outdoors Colorado began working on creating the new park back in 2019.

CPW officially acquired the property, which is home to mule deer, elk, mountain lion, black bear, and more, from its partners on April 2, 2020.

There is no word yet as to when Fishers Peak will open to the public, but when it does, outdoor enthusiasts will be able to enjoy numerous activities in the park, including hiking, mountain biking, hunting, horseback riding, and more.
