Fort Collins Monitoring Water Supply as Fires Close In

The City of Fort Collins is worried about our water supply.

In a Facebook post Friday, October 23, the city shared a message from Mayor Wade Troxell and City Manager Darin Atteberry about how the two major wildfires in Northern Colorado: the Cameron Peak Fire and the East Troublesome Fire may affect our water supply in Fort Collins.

Breathe deep, because as of right now, the supply is not affected. According to the post, Fort Collins uses water from both the Cache La Poudre River and Horsetooth Reservoir. While those sources are unfazed, watersheds have been extensively impacted: the Poudre River watershed, the Colorado-Big Thompson project, as well as three others in Northern Colorado.

The City is monitoring several things when it comes to clean water in our city: sediment and ash in the supply, the safety of the staff, and making sure everyone in Fort Collins has access to clean water. The city encourages you to contact Fort Collins Utilities if you believe your water has been compromised.
