October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and while adopting a shelter dog may seem like the obvious way to get involved, it's not the only one.

India Blake is an award-winning photographer and author who penned the children's book Gypsy to the Rescue, a story about a German Shepherd puppy in need of a forever home. Blake is also an animal advocate — so we decided to ask her about ways we can support our local animal shelters.

"There are plenty of ways to support local animal shelters in one's area," said Blake in our "Tuned In to NoCo" interview. "Due to COVID, many volunteer opportunities are still limited, but essential shelter needs still include fostering and transportation or donations — food, leashes, towels, or bedding are all extremely helpful for shelters."

But where can you go to help? Northern Colorado currently has an abundance of animal shelters, including All Aboard Animal Rescue, Animal Friends Alliance, Bounce Animal Rescue, Rescued Friends Animal Sanctuary, the Larimer Humane Society, and the Humane Society of Weld County.

And while fostering a dog may not be for everyone, it is a rewarding experience. In fact, fostering was the inspiration for Blake's book.

"I actually fostered a dog that I named Gypsy and after hearing the story of her many failed adoptions...it became my purpose to find her a forever home," said Blake. "I hope that everybody gets involved in this very important month."
