It's been an ongoing battle for a few years now: What will become of the land where Colorado State University's Hughes Stadium once stood? Many Fort Collins residents have voiced (and voted for) their desire for the land to remain 'open,' while the university had plans to develop affordable housing for its empoyees (which, we know, is hard to come by in Fort Collins).

On November 15, the City of Fort Collins announced that it would be moving forward with its plan to purchase Hughes Stadium's land from CSU for $12.5 million. That means there are no longer plans to develop the area into affordable housing at this time.

CSU System Chancellor Tony Frank said that the university believes that 'this plan ensures the City is responsive to the will of the voters who asked that this remain open space...'

'We were, of course, disappointed to lose the option of affordable housing for our employees at the Hughes site, and we will continue to prioritize opportunities such as our partnership with Cottonwood to address that critical need, because it isn’t going away,' Frank said in the news release from the City. Frank is referring to Cottonwood Land and Farms, a private landowner that is working with the university to develop affordable housing elsewhere.

The City will further discuss the land's use in upcoming Council Work Sessions and will ask the public for input.
