Strong winds damaged the IKEA sign in Centennial Thursday night, temporarily shutting down both directions and the RTD light rail service on I-25.

According to South Metro Fire spokesman Steve Standridge, two 6-feet by 10-feet steel panels on the IKEA sign were blown loose by 20-40 mph wind gusts.

"We were fearful that if the winds continued to blow and pull them further loose, the panels would eventually come off and fly across the RTD line as well as into the highway, potentially striking a vehicle," Standridge told Denver7.

It took nearly 2 hours to secure the panels.

"[South Metro Fire] drilled holes to the back side of the panel through the front side, then secured it in multiple places using wire to make sure it wouldn't come loose," said Standridge, adding they are confident it is safe.

The interstate reopened in both directions at around 8:15 p.m.

IKEA Centennial spokeswoman Megan Thompson tells Denver7 the IKEA team will inspect the sign and may take additional precautions to ensure its safety.
