Colorado Parks and Wildlife is celebrating Bat Week this week. (October 24-31). "It's an annual international recognition of the important role that these flying mammals play in nature." It's also leading up to Halloween, which is often associated with these amazing creatures.

 Here are 10 Things You May Not Know About Bats From CPW

  1. There are many things we can learn from bats, including new techniques for UAV flight, how to improve sonar, and how to fight disease.
  2. Researchers have found a potential anti-coagulant from studying vampire bats.
  3. Bats are wonderful mothers, able to find their baby among thousands of others after a night out feeding.
  4. Bats sometimes fly with their baby bat hanging on.
  5. There are 18 species of bats in Colorado, including 13 hibernating species.
  6. Hibernation typically begins in November and runs through March, depending on weather conditions.
  7. During the winter, bats either migrate thousands of miles to warmer climates or tuck into hibernation sites to wait for spring.
  8. The largest bat colony in Colorado is in the San Luis Valley, there is a colony of 250,000 Brazilian Free-Tailed Bats that come out every night.
  9. Bats save farmers billions of dollars each year. They are important for controlling insects. Bats are mosquito eaters, but also chow down on agricultural pests that may otherwise threaten our crops and plants.
