Relax at These Historic Hot Springs in Ouray, Colorado

Nestled in the scenic San Juan Mountains of Colorado at 7,760 feet, sits the historic Wiesbaden Hot Springs - a relaxing destination unlike anywhere else in the state.

The Ute Indians first settled at this location in Ouray and considered the waters of the springs to be sacred. Other tribes often traveled for days to reach these "Miracle Waters" as well. During an archeological dig, the historic ruins of an adobe home believed to have belonged to the chief of the Ute Tribe were discovered.

In 1879, the first documented structure of Wiesbaden was built. It was known as Mother Buchanan's Bath House and catered to miners in the area. It was the miners who were actually responsible for accidentally creating the caves at this site while searching for gold. The commercial enterprise served the community until the 1920s.

It was around this time that doctor, C.V. Bates built the Bates Hospital and Sanitarium over the hot springs. Bates also enlarged the vapor cave during his time as the property owner. People came from near and far to soak up the benefits of the springs and vapor cave. The waters were especially thought to help with the treatment of arthritis.

Linda Wright-Minter took over the beautiful location in 1978. As Wiesbaden Hot Springs, this enchanting destination has now evolved into a therapeutic spa, with an eighteen-inch deep underground thermal soaking pool, the vapor cave, another private soaking pool, and an outdoor pool that's surrounded by the majestic mountains. The pool ranges in temperature from 99 to 102 degrees and is fed continuously by the mineral hot springs.

Temperatures of the thermal soaking pools range from 102 to 111 degrees. To keep the waters as natural as possible, the soaking facilities are chemical-free and do not use any recirculated water.

The vapor cave is situated under the mountain, below the main lodge. Water cascades over natural formations and into the soaking pool. The Wiesbaden offers spa treatments that promote relaxation too.

The health-oriented establishment also provides on-site accommodations for guests who wish to stay longer for a spa getaway. There's a variety of places to stay on the property, including a historic cabin and a quaint cottage.
