Most Dangerous Highways By State
The Data from CarInsuranceComparison.com ranks U.S. Highway 1 in Florida as the most dangerous highway in America. It runs from Key West (above) up the East Coast to the state of Maine. In Florida, more than 1000 deaths have occurred on this highway.
Elsewhere in the top ten, Wyoming's Interstate 80 is ranked 9th for its wind and hazardous winter travel conditions. Colorado's 550 is ranked 10th for dangerous driving conditions following snowfall. See the full list here.
Colorado's Most Dangerous Highways
- I‑70 (Vail to Glenwood Springs) More than 300 crashes in 2024, with common hazards including sharp turns, black ice, and fog.
- I‑25 (Denver to Colorado Springs) I-25 recorded over 1200 crashes last year.
- U.S. Highway 160 / Wolf Creek Pass U.S. 160 has averaged 11 fatalities per year for several years.
- U.S. Highway 287 (Fort Collins – Wyoming) 570 crashes, 15 fatal since 2019
- Loveland Pass (US 6) – Steep curves, Subject to winter closures with no tunnel alternatives.

What Makes These Colorado Roads So Deadly?
- Elevation & Weather: High altitudes mean ice and sudden storms (I-70, Wolf Creek Pass).
- Mountain Highways: These roads feature hairpins, cliffs/drop-offs, and few guardrails (such as 550).
- Traffic Volume & Behavior: rush hour in metro areas means speeding and frequent distractions (I-25, I-70).
- Wildlife Crossings: US-36 and US-160 see frequent deer and moose activity.
