Because of Colorado's rich history, there are plenty of places that you'll find across the state, especially in rural areas, that have been abandoned.

It's for this reason that Colorado is filled with ghost towns, historic cemeteries, and abandoned buildings.

Let's take a look inside an old, abandoned motel that dates back to the 1930s, a time when these types of lodging offerings were known as cottage courts.

The creation of the automobile saw an influx of the desire to travel across the United States, as well as a need for lodging for these people. Travelers had different, rather limited options around this time, and the need for lodging grew even more after U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower's interstate highway system was put into place.

It was around this period of time that cottage courts began sprouting up, and would eventually become what we now know as the modern motel.

It's unclear as to exactly where the cottage court that we're about to explore is located, but it appears to be along a dirt highway in a very rural part of Colorado, surrounded by mountains and aspen trees.

It's also unclear as to when exactly the cottage court was abandoned, though the explorer did find a piece of literature from 2008, though other findings would suggest that it was left behind long before that.
