New research shows that the most common African nation of origin for naturalized citizens in Colorado is Ethiopia. Other states that share this statistic include Nevada, Washington, Oregon, South Dakota, and Virginia.

However, no state that borders Colorado shares this statistic.

What Are the Most Common African Countries of Origin for Colorado's Neighbors?

Suppose we travel outside the borders of Colorado. In that case, we’ll find that the most common African country of origin for naturalized citizens in Oklahoma and New Mexico is Nigeria, a country on the other side of the continent from Ethiopia that borders the Atlantic Ocean.

In Arizona and Utah, the most common African nation of origin for naturalized citizens is Liberia, which is located even further west of Ethiopia than Nigeria.

The most common African country of origin for Wyoming citizens is South Africa, for Nebraska it’s Somalia, and for Kansas it’s Kenya.
