There are some places that are just synonymous with classic horror movies. There’s the Amityville Horror house, the apartment from the Exorcist, and Camp Crystal Lake, but arguably, no other setting is more iconic than the Overlook Hotel. Or, as we know it in Colorado, the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park.

While the original 1977 film, which was based on an experience from Stephen King while staying at the hotel, The Shining, wasn’t filmed in Estes Park, King’s 1997 miniseries was, and The Stanley Hotel has become synonymous with the classic horror tale.

Recently, Colorado horror fans were treated to a big announcement detailing plans to make The Stanley Hotel even more a part of horror movie culture with a massive project led by a prominent name in the genre.

Colorado’s Stanley Hotel to Become Even More of a Horror Hub

Blumhouse, the production company behind films like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Get Out, is the namesake of Jason Blum, the man who has teamed up with the Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Authority to erect the new Stanley Event Center, an expansion of the infamous hotel.

The space will focus on horror films and is being created to not only celebrate the genre but also attract horror fans from across the globe, as well as actors and people like Blum, who help create these films.

According to Variety, the Stanley Event Center will feature the following:

…a 1,000-seat theater for film premieres, screenings, events, and concerts, 64 new luxury rooms for the hotel, a new lobby, a new porte cochere and more.
A groundbreaking ceremony with Governor Jared Polis took place recently, and the Stanley Event Center is expected to open sometime in 2028.
