The Larimer County Sheriff's Office is warning holiday shoppers the watch out for a gift card scam that features gift cards that deposit money on the scammers' cards rather than that of the intended recipient.

That's according to a post on the Larimer County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

According to the post, the scammers are stealing gift cards from store racks, carefully opening them, and then replacing the code on the back of the card with one from their own gift card.

When someone purchases the card and it is activated, the money goes to the scammer's card, which they can then use.

The agency is offering the following steps to prevent the scam:

-Register the card if possible

-Order cards directly from the business instead of buying them off the shelf

If you do buy from a kiosk, check carefully to make sure the packaging has not been tampered with
