A male suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Johnstown.

According to the original press release from the Larimer County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), the incident occurred just after 10 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 21) when a LCSO deputy tried to stop a vehicle in the 2800 block of SE Frontage Road.

The driver of the car began fleeing from officers at a "high rate of speed." Police were able to stop them near Highway 402 using a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT), which The Atlanta Journal-Constitution describes as an officer using their front bumper to touch a suspect's rear bumper so that their car spins out and stops.

After deputies successfully halted the vehicle, LCSO reported that an adult male suspect got out of the car and approached the officers with a knife, ignoring various orders to stop.

One of the deputies then shot the suspect, striking him. Authorities transported him to an area hospital with serious injuries. No officers were injured.

In an updated press release from Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS), the agency managing public information on this case, FCPS stated that, despite deputy efforts to provide first aid at the scene, the suspect died of his injuries at the hospital.

The Larimer County Coroner has not yet revealed the suspect's official cause of death. He had been driving a 2005 Honda Pilot with an adult female passenger, who did not sustain any injuries.

The Loveland Police Department (LPD) is investigating this incident along with the Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team. If you have any information about this case, please contact LPD Detective Jen Pfoff at (970) 962-2225.
