A Thursday (July 22) hearing shed light on the case against Colorado man Barry Morphew, who is accused of murdering his wife, Suzanne.

Suzanne Morphew disappeared from her Chaffee County home on May 10, 2020, after reportedly going for a bike ride and never coming home. Investigators believe that she is no longer alive, although they have not recovered her body.

After staying mum about the case for nearly a year, authorities arrested Barry this May. He is currently in the Chaffee County Detention Center, facing the following charges:

  • Murder in the First Degree
  • Tampering With a Deceased Human Body
  • Tampering With Physical Evidence
  • Possession of a Dangerous Weapon
  • Attempt to Influence a Public Servant
  • Forgery
  • Misdemeanor - offenses relating to mail ballots

According to FOX21, lawyers discussed the evidence in the Morphew case for the first time during Thursday's hearing, revealing that data from a spy pen, phones, laptops, surveillance video, and an Amazon Kindle will be presented at an August trial.

Judge Patrick Murphy said there is an "enormous" amount of evidence in the case — something that has caused problems for Barry's attorneys. The defense team alleges they had trouble accessing cellphone data from the Morphews' daughters and difficulty hearing audio from the spy pen, which features a conversation between Suzanne and an unidentified man.

The station reports that Murphy gave the prosecution team seven days to produce complete evidence. He also denied the defense team's requests for a bond and a lesser murder charge.

Barry is set to appear in the Chaffee County District Court again in August for a four-day preliminary hearing. The prosecution is expected to present up to 18 witnesses during the trial.
