A man is in custody after allegedly pulling a gun on a Colorado father during a road rage incident.

According to a press release from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPCS), the incident occurred on Thursday (July 22), when 36-year-old Darwin Hilliard reportedly fired a gun through his vehicle's sunroof in Widefield.

The victim told CBS4 that Hilliard had cut him off in traffic. When he honked his horn at Hilliard, the suspect drew his gun, an AR-15, and fired two shots in the air. The victim's children were in the car with him at the time.

"As soon as I heard gunshots, I told [my kids] to get down on the ground," he said to the station. "I see him come out of his vehicle wearing body armor with an AR-15 pointed at me...at that time, I threw it in reverse and got the heck out of there."

Police say that Hilliard proceeded to barricade himself inside of his Cornell Street home. After around three hours, he surrendered, and EPCS' Tactical Support Unit was able to take him into custody without incident.

Authorities also found multiple weapons, ammunition, and body armor in Hilliard's home.

Hilliard is currently in the El Paso County Jail, facing the following charges:

  • Felony Menacing
  • Prohibited Use of a Weapon
  • Reckless Endangerment
  • Sexual Assault (3 counts - Failure to Appear Warrant, unrelated to this incident)

Police did not reveal when Hilliard is set to appear in court or if he has a bond. No further information is available at this time.
