While Northern Colorado schools have shut their doors and extended spring breaks to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus, it didn't stop parents and students from voting in the Teacher Tuesday March Educator of the Month contest.

Denise Kennedy of Windsor's Grandview Elementary collected the most votes, winning $500 for her school provided by University of Northern Colorado and UNC Extended Campus. The second grade teacher is also taking home a prize pack that includes a free oil change from Ozzie's Body Shop.

The normal procedure for a Teacher Tuesday winner is to surprise the educator in their class. With current constraints, Kennedy was notified with an email and phone call.

Kennedy has set up digital tools for parents of her classroom to use if they choose. She's also been busy keeping her three children busy during social distancing.

Kennedy said she's wanted to be a teacher since she was about five years old and takes pride in teaching her pupils 'kindness."

When asked about her favorite thing about being a teacher, she replied:

There is so much I love about being a teacher! I love seeing my students little faces every day; watching them light up when they solve a math problem or scream when the baking soda – vinegar volcano explodes, but most of all, I love helping them to grow into loving, caring people. I love fostering a safe environment that allows them to grow and shine. There is nothing better in this world then to know that you have planted seeds of kindness in little peoples hearts that will continue to grow throughout their lives.
