Police are currently investigating a motor vehicle accident that left one dead during the evening of June 3 in Berthoud.

At approximately 9:37 p.m., the Larimer County Sheriff's Office received reports of a crash involving a Chevy pickup truck and a pedestrian in the 1000 block of US 287 in Berthoud.

Upon arriving on scene, CRASH team investigators determined that a 60-year-old man from Berthoud was traveling southbound on US 287 in the pickup truck when he struck a 23-year-old Fort Collins man who was walking in the southbound lanes of the roadway. The 23-year-old was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, and the Larimer County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity once next of kin is notified.

The driver of the pickup was not injured and was released at the scene. Investigators do believe that impairment was a factor of this incident and are working to determine how drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.

During the initial investigation, southbound US 287 was closed for nearly five hours. As the investigation continues, police would like anyone who witnessed the crash and has not already spoken to a deputy to please call Deputy Billy Gentry at 970-498-5558. Other agencies who assisted on the call were Berthoud Fire Protection District, Thompson Valley EMS, and CDOT.
