September 24 is National Public Lands Day – the country’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands, so why not spend the morning at one of Fort Collins’ newest natural areas, participating in local land conservation and helping to get the location ready for future visitors?

Set to open to the public sometime in 2017, Tanglewood is a beautiful 10-acre site that's located about 1/4 mile west of Taft Hill Road in Fort Collins, and can easily be accessed from the Spring Creek Trail. The new area includes a small pond and lots of shrubbery, vines, and downed wood, making it a perfect place for bird watching and wildlife viewing. A pair of red-tailed hawks nested here earlier this year.

From 9 a.m. to noon on NPLD, volunteers at Tanglewood will be removing wire fencing and doing some clean-up to help make way for a more aesthetic and wildlife-friendly fence. There will be project options for kids and families, and lunch will be provided too. Those volunteering are asked to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, and it would also be a good idea to bring sunscreen, mosquito spray, eye protection and work gloves if you have them. Volunteers must register in order to participate. Meeting and parking details will be emailed to registered participants, but because of Tanglewood's closeness to the Spring Creek Trail, biking to the project is especially encouraged!
