During the next few months, millions of people across the country will be ordering holiday gifts for themselves, friends, and family members, and as packages pile up on doorsteps, greedy thieves frequently take the opportunity to swipe these deliveries from their rightful owners.

According to a recent study done by CCTV Camera World, a record 20 billion parcels were shipped in the U.S. last year. Unfortunately for Colorado, the study showed that the Centennial state ranks No. 13 in the nation when it comes to porch thefts, with 1,858 crimes per 100,000 state residents.

CCTV Camera World determined the rankings by analyzing larceny-theft in each state, the crime category that includes package theft.

Based on the study, Washington D.C. ranked No. 1 for porch thefts. CCTV's findings show that Massachusetts and Idaho are tied for having the lowest larceny-theft rate.

The rise of online shopping goes hand in hand with package theft. As both trends continue to increase, 14 states have now established specific penalties for people caught participating in this type of crime. However, porch piracy or package theft does not yet have its own crime category on the federal level.

Some tips to prevent your packages from being stolen include installing a porch lockbox or security cameras, enabling tracking and text alerts from the carrier, and requesting non-descript packaging from the sender, if possible.
