Tyler, The Creator Goes Off on NFTs, Calls Them a ‘D!ck-Swinging Contest’ – Watch
NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are all the rage on social media, with several rappers like Soulja Boy and Snoop Dogg capitalizing on the trend and getting paid for their exclusive content. But for Tyler, The Creator, he views NFTs as a "dick-swinging contest."
In an interview with Converse, which was published on the sneaker brand's YouTube channel on Wednesday (March 2), the former Odd Future leader slammed NFTs and questioned their existence.
"What the fuck is a NFT?" Tyler responded when asked about the hype surrounding non-fungible tokens.
The Call Me If You Get Lost creator went on to compare his real-life activities to that of the imaginary world of NFTs. For Tyler, NFTs and the metaverse are not reality.
"I paint at home, I play instruments. I have a friend who's making me speakers by hand right now," he stated. "What the fuck is a NFT?"
"It's just a dick-swinging contest and like, 'Look I bought a picture of a monkey,'" he concluded with bewilderment on his face.
Tyler acknowledges that he has no idea what an NFT is and how it works in the metaverse. He further added that he hasn't seen anything artful in the NFT world.
"None of the examples I've seen is, like, beautiful art," Tyler said. "It's a fucking monkey in a Supreme hoodie. You can't NFT me looking at you in real life."
Although Tyler is an NFT skeptic, rappers like Eminem, Curren$y and Jim Jones have been cashing in on the trend.
In fact, not only is Em a seller of NFTs, he also collects them. Back in January, the Detroit rhymer purchased a Bored Ape NFT, dubbed the "EminApe," for a whopping $425,000. The NFT, which supposedly looks like Em with its olive-colored hat and gold Cuban-style chain, was sold by BAYC member GeeGazza for 123.45 ETh ($425,000) on Dec. 30, 2021.
At the time, a rep for Eminem confirmed to XXL that Slim Shady is the proud owner of the Bored Ape NFT and the artwork is currently his avatar on his Twitter account.
So, despite what Tyler thinks, there is big money in NFTs.
