When I worked in the brewing industry, I remember our conversations about the lack of diversity in brewing often: why were so many brewers white? More importantly, how can we offer more opportunities to brewers of color?

These are the types of conversations brewers all over the country are having after the events of social unrest in 2020, and WeldWerks Brewing Co. in Greeley is taking the conversation one step further.

According to a press release, WeldWerks Brewing Co. is partnering with the University of Northern Colorado to launch the WeldWerks Diversity Scholarship, "a yearly scholarship for current and prospective University of Northern Colorado (UNC) students of color, with an additional preference towards those who have an interest in Brewing Science."

WeldWerks has chipped in $25,000 with an additional $4,000 to fund this year's scholarship, and they plan to increase their donation to $100,000 by the end of 2022.

After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, WeldWerks donated $5,000 to Black Lives Matter 5280 and Campaign Zero, and want to put actions—and funds— behind their words of inclusivity and goodwill. After talking more with the organizer for Greeley’s Black Lives Matter march and Dr. George Junne, Associate Professor of Africana Studies at UNC, the WeldWerks Diversity Scholarship was officially created.

Yes, you or your children can sign up for the scholarship as soon as today. Head to this link to learn more and apply.
