Why Is Actress Jennifer Lawrence Weighing in on Colorado’s Election?
The actress has partnered with RepresentUs to urge Coloradans to vote 'yes' on certain amendments in the current election.
In the video below, Lawrence discusses 'gerrymandering.' Gerrymandering, by definition, is 'to divide or arrange (a territorial unit) into election districts to give one political party an electoral majority in a large number of districts while concentrating the voting strength of the opposition in as few districts as possible.' (Merriam-Webster)
Or, as Lawrence expresses, it allows politicians to 'pick their voters.'
The Gazette in Colorado Springs gives an in-depth look at the Amendments Y and Z here.
'Fair Maps Colorado presented redistricting reforms that included independent redistricting commissions and emphasis on fairness and better representation to the Legislature in its 2018 session.' -Fair Maps Colorado
Arnold Schwarzenegger also recently spoke in Denver with Governor Hickenlooper about gerrymandering, CBS4 reported, as a part of his 'Terminate Gerrymandering' campaign (ha ha). So, why do celebrities care how Colorado votes? Fair Maps is claiming that Colorado could be a national model for eliminating gerrymandering, and create less of a partisan representation, and more balance in legislation.
Whether you agree or disagree, remember to VOTE. Election Day is November 6, 2018.
