A Larimer County Jail Deputy has been charged with 3rd Degree Assault (a class 1 misdemeanor) after attempting to discipline a female inmate.

The incident occurred on February 9, when the inmate entered an area she was not allowed to be in.

Deputy Ricardo Gurrola told her to return to her authorized area, but she refused.

He then removed her from the from the prohibited area, and pushed her into a cell with enough force that she fell to the ground.

Jail staff reported the incident to their supervisors shortly after.

Gurrola was placed on paid administrative leave while an criminal investigation took place. After meeting with investigators, the district attorney's office summonsed Gurrola for assault on February 21.

However, the internal investigation for Gurolla, who has been with the Larimer County Jail since 2017, is still ongoing.

"Maintaining order and discipline in jails is a very difficult task," said Sheriff Justin Smith. "It is important for the community to know that we are transparent in our actions and we hold our staff to the highest of professional standards."

Smith also noted that the Larimer County Sheriff's Office will not make any judgments until the internal investigation is completed.
