A man led deputies on a chase from Loveland to Horsetooth Reservoir to a crash on Taft Hill Road on Friday night.

Alexander Brendel, 29, was eventually arrested and booked into the Larimer County Jail for the incident. He's charged with seven counts including a pair of felony charges for vehicular eluding and second degree assault on a peace officer.

The incident began around 5 p.m. when the Larimer County Sheriff's Office received reports of a suicidal male who had left the 2900 block of North County Road 29 in Loveland. According to a press release from the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, neighbors had reported Brendel was armed with a shotgun and had a dog in the vehicle with him.

Deputies later got reports of Brendel driving recklessly near the South Bay of Horsetooth Reservoir. When law enforcement attempted to pull him over with emergency lights, Brendel fled.

The suspect later crashed into another vehicle in the Mulberry Street and Taft Hill Road intersection and barricaded himself in the vehicle. The intersection was closed for about two hours for the rest of the incident and investigation.

An armored rescue vehicle was deployed as reports say Brendel initially refused to follow commands. Fort Collins police assisted in the incident.

Brendel eventually climbed out the window and was struck with a foam baton. He was taken into a hospital and custody without further incident.

In addition to the felony charges, Brendel faces third degree assault, reckless driving, DUI, cruelty to animals and resisting arrest charges.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. An arrest is merely an accusation from law enforcement.
