Suspect Arrested for Attempted Kidnapping in Fort Collins

A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a kidnapping and impersonation incident that occurred in Fort Collins in August of 2021.

According to Fort Collins Police, two teenage girls reported a scenario in which they were approached by an unknown man while walking in a neighborhood on the south side of town late last summer.

In their report, the girls stated that at approximately 2 a.m., a black, four-door sedan with a rideshare driver sticker in the window drove up to them. The male driver of the vehicle proceeded to get out and tried to convince the girls to come with him. When the victims refused to get inside the car, the man told them he was a police officer. The girls asked to see his badge, but the suspect instead flashed a concealed firearm.

The man again tried to get the girls to enter his vehicle, claiming he was concerned for their safety. At this time, one of the teens activated the emergency app on her cell phone. The quick-thinking female informed the suspect she had called the police, scaring him to the point in which he got back inside his vehicle and drove off.

Officers arrived on-scene and canvassed the area, but were unable to locate any people or vehicles matching the description that the girls provided.

Fort Collins detectives took over the case and through their investigation, ultimately identified Justin Svetich as the suspect involved in this incident.
