Voice of the Rockies, Jerry Schemmel, Loses KOA Radio Job
After 10 seasons, Jerry Schemmel will no longer call the Rockies games on KOA radio.
The sports broadcaster announced on Thursday (January 16), that he lost his job as part of iHeartMedia's nationwide lay offs, according to The Denver Post.
KOA was a part of iHeartMedia and the employer of Schemmel, meaning that the Rockies had nothing to do with the decision.
Rockies manager Bud Black even remarked that he was sad to see Schemmel go, noting that he would "miss our daily interactions."
Schemmel, who has over 30 years of experience in sports radio altogether, including an 18-year span with the Denver Nuggets, was shocked to hear the news.
"I never saw this coming. I really didn't," he said. "Calling baseball games was my dream job, always had been. Now I'll have to find out what challenge comes next."
On top of the shock, Schemmel is also dealing with his wife's recent cancer diagnosis.
His former on-air co-host, Jack Corrigan, was not let go. Corrigan said that he does not know who will be replacing Schemmel, but that a decision has to be made before spring training starts.
A spokesperson for iHeartMedia declined to comment on Schemmel's situation specifically, but stated that the job cuts are due to the modernization of the company.
