Weld County Detects West Nile Virus in Berthoud
During the week of July 27, a group of mosquitos collected from traps in Berthoud tested positive for West Nile Virus.
I'm glad to know this because my toddler recently got a water table and sometimes we forget to drain it. Water is of course a literal breeding ground for mosquitos.
The areas of Greeley, Evans, Johnstown, Miliken, Platteville, Fort Lupton, Dacono and Firestone are tested through a contract between Weld County and an outside vender.
According to the Weld County Health Department, this is the first positive West Nile test in Weld County this year. However 15 mosquito groups, trapped the weekend of August 3, are still pending.
Risk of WNV is low and there are no human cases of WNV in Colorado.
West Nile Virus Symptoms:
- Symptoms appear 3-14 days after an infection
- Early symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, weakness and rash. Unfortunately, most infected people don't exhibit any symptoms.
- There are no medications to prevent WNV
- Less than one percent of people of infected people develop serious illness.
Health officials recommend following the four “D’s” to prevent mosquito bites: According to weldgov.com
- DRAIN standing water around your house weekly. Remember to drain water from tires, cans, flowerpots, clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, toys, and puddles.
- DUSK and DAWN are when mosquitoes are most active. Limit outdoor activities and take precautions to prevent mosquito bites during these times.
- DEET is an effective ingredient to look for in insect repellents. Always follow label instructions carefully.
- DRESS in long sleeves and pants in areas where mosquitoes are active.
