Could Northern Colorado See A Foot of Snow This Weekend?

Colorado, we love you. But sometimes your weather is just plain silly. As the weekend quickly approaches, so is a possible winter storm.

The Warm Before the Storm

According to the Weather Channel, we are expected to see a high of nearly 90 degrees on Thursday before the changing weather pattern moves into the Front Range of Colorado. Friday's high is expected to be only 45 degrees with a low of 33 degrees, plus an 85 percent chance of rain. Saturday's high is forecasted to be only 46 degrees with a rain/snow mixture, and a low of 28 degrees.

How Much Snow Will Northern Colorado Get?

As you have seen with Colorado weather, it can be quite unpredictable. However, two GFS (Global Forecast System) Models are showing that the Front Range could see a good amount of snow between Friday and Sunday.

Remember the gigantic snowstorm in March of 2021? The GFS Model from the College of DuPage predicted the large snowstorm days before local forecasters predicted the snowfall. The College of DuPage's GFS model is predicting that the Front Range could see nearly 20 inches in some areas of the Denver Metro Area.

Another weather forecasting site, Pivotal Weather, has a GFS model projecting significant snowfall for most of the Front Range from the Denver Metro Area to the north.

This particular model shows the possibility of Fort Collins getting over a foot of snow, parts of Denver receiving over 16 inches, and the Longmont area a couple of inches shy of two feet of snow by midnight Sunday morning.

That Much Snow in Colorado in Late May... Really?

I am not a meteorologist, so I can only see what I see on these GFS models. They predict the incoming weather. I will say that I have seen models like this over the past few months that predict a big storm, only to watch the impending snowstorm fizzle out the day before.

Here in Northern Colorado, we have had nice, warm weather over the past few days. We also have a forecasted high of nearly 90 the day before the forecasted snowstorm is supposed to roll into our area. If Colorado does get this forecasted storm, I don't think that the snow will stick around long due to the warm weather we have had over the previous days.

For now, all we can do is wait and see what will happen with this upcoming weather change and hope for the best.
