Colorado Resident Charged for Feeding Bears
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is constantly reminding the public not to feed the bears (see here and here and here), but people are just not getting it.
Wildlife officers in Douglas County have filed misdemeanor charges against a Castle Rock resident who was purposely feeding bears, according to a press release from CPW.
The resident could face up to $2,000 in fines for the violation.
"It is selfish and unethical to feed bears. You are going to end up unintentionally killing those animals and also putting yourself in harm's way," said Matt Martinez, Area Wildlife Manager, in the press release. "If what you want is a pet or just to connect with an animal, choose a domestic breed that has evolved to live with people."
Feeding bears, whether intentionally or not, causes the animals to become used to humans, which increases bear-human conflicts.
In order to avoid unintentional feeding, CPW suggests securing your trash cans and removing bird feeders from your property.
In order to avoid intentionally feeding bears...just don't feed them.
