No Charges For Driver Who Killed Fort Collins Child in Crosswalk
Fort Collins Police announced in a press release that it declined to file charges against a driver who struck and killed a six-year-old Fort Collins boy in a crosswalk near Lopez Elementary in November.
The 23-year-old male driver was driving a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV eastbound on Wabash Street. Several eyewitnesses reported seeing the SUV properly stop at a stop sign and seeing a cleared crosswalk.
Investigators determined that the boy, Vale Wolkow, then entered the crosswalk and was struck by the SUV. The driver braked but was unable to avoid hitting the child.
The investigation determined the SUV was traveling at about 14 MPH at the time of the collision — the speed limit there is 25 MPH. Sun glare and distracted driving were also ruled out as factors.
“Through an intensive review of the facts, investigators determined that a number of factors aligned and resulted in what can only be described as a tragic accident,” said Fort Collins Police Chief Jeff Swoboda in a press release.
“There are no words to express our heartache for the Wolkow family, the Lopez community, and all involved in this incident.”
Wolkow was attended to quickly by a nearby nurse and school resource officer. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he sadly passed.
According to the Coloradoan, Wolkow was one of four siblings and hundreds attended his 'Celebration of Life' service. Rev. Corey Nelson said the family referred to themselves as a "six pack" completed by Vale, the family's youngest child.
Please keep Vale and his family in your thoughts this holiday season.
