Paul McCartney played his only London gig of 2011 last night (Dec. 5) — and he made it count, delivering a hits-packed, three-hour set to his O2 Arena fans, including several songs he’d never played in the UK before.

But that wasn’t all McCartney had in store for fans: as the evening drew to a close, he told the crowd he had a “surprise” for them before bringing out Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood, who joined McCartney for an energetic performance of ‘Get Back.’

Wood’s unexpected appearance provided a fitting climax for an unforgettable evening, one which found McCartney mixing classic solo and Beatles hits like ‘Paperback Writer’ and ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ with newer favorites (such as ‘Sing the Changes,’ from ‘Electric Arguments,’ his 2008 release under his Fireman pseudonym) and deep cuts (including ‘The Night Before,’ ‘The Word,’ and ‘Come and Get It,’ all making their live UK debuts).

McCartney will next appear at Manchester’s MEN Arena on Dec. 19, followed by a show in Liverpool on Dec. 20. His most recent release is a new album of classical compositions, ‘Ocean’s Kingdom.’ Released in October, it serves as the score for a New York City Ballet show about a love story that takes place between underwater creatures and their land-dwelling antagonists.
