Weld County HS Students Record Reenactment Of George Floyd Murder

A high school in Weld County is facing some major heat after multiple students shared a video to social media reenacting the murder of George Floyd, who died after being arrested by police outside a shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2020.

According to the Denver Post, three students from Mead High School posted a reenactment of George Floyd’s death to social media, an act the school superintendent called “disturbing and disgusting” on Thursday (May 20).

As per a tweet shared by a former Mead High School student, the attached photo shows a student in blackface lying on the ground as one teen kneeled on his neck and another kneeled on his back - a replica of the acts leading up to Floyd’s killing just a year ago in Minneapolis, which sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice.

On top of the photo read a caption that reportedly said, “Bye bye senoirs (sic).”

In a letter sent out Wednesday (May 19) to the entire Mead High School community, Principal Rachael Ayers said the “highly offensive photo” was taken on school grounds and that the administration has “begun an investigation into the matter.”

“I know that this behavior does not represent our strong Maverick community, and I want to acknowledge the supportive school culture our students, faculty and staff have cultivated through a challenging time,” Ayers wrote.

St. Vrain Valley School District Superintendent Don Haddad on Thursday called the photo “disgusting and disturbing.”

“We in the St. Vrain Valley Schools strongly condemn, and have no tolerance for, racism in any form and will be addressing this extremely serious matter immediately and accordingly,” Haddad wrote. “Our district reaffirms its commitment to diversity and equality in our schools and in our operations.”

Reports regarding the incident from the Denver Post noted that It is unclear when the photo was taken and the students involved have not been identified.

The disturbing photo has surfaced nearly a year to the day after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin killed Floyd, and a month after a jury convicted Chauvin of murder.

As of Friday (May 21), nearly 8,000 people have signed this petition titled 'Bringing the racial profiling discrimination that occurs at MHS to notice', bringing much attention to both the photo and incident as a whole.
