The Stanley Hotel, located in Estes Park, inspired Stephen King's best-selling novel The Shining. The book sold over 700,000 copies and was adapted into a film starring Jack Nicholson in 1980.

In the book and movie, The Stanley Hotel was renamed The Overlook.
