The City of Fort Collins has updated its recycling rules, telling residents to forget about recycling certain types of plastic because it's too expensive.

The city says markets have disappeared for certain types of plastic so that they can't resell it.  They go on to say that the processing of recycled materials is expensive and if nobody needs the plastic, it ends up in the landfill anyway.

The Coloradoan is reporting that these items are no longer considered recyclable:

Low-grade plastics such as berry containers, salad boxes, party cups, "clamshell" take out containers and black plastic trays typically used for frozen prepared meals are no longer considered recyclable.

Items that are still good to recycle: cans, glass bottles, jars, metals and paper cartons.
